School of Discipleship

In addition to gathering weekly for Sunday worship, we encourage all in our church family to participate in our Wednesday evening School of Discipleship offerings throughout the ministry year.

 

Wednesdays this Fall

(All events will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. with the exception of Chamber Series concerts, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.)

 

September 10 | "How to Teach the Bible" with Helen Holbrook 

No matter your current level of experience, learn how to read and teach the Bible with Christ-centered passion from Helen Holbrook.

Helen was born in the Washington, DC area, and as the child of a Naval officer, grew up on both coasts. Helen’s lifelong career of working with young people began as an elementary school teacher and volunteer with YoungLife in Richmond, VA. After several years of teaching, she became the children’s director at Trinity Pres in Charlottesville, VA, where she was mentored by Ed Clowney and Skip Ryan. She filled the same role in Texas at Park Cities Pres in Dallas and then helped plant Christ the King in Houston. After five years on the North Shore of Chicago at Grace Presbyterian Church, she returned to Texas before her retirement to Williamsburg, VA. Now Helen is a volunteer teacher in children’s church and in an after-school Good News Club. Her vision for children’s ministries remains "to bring the heart of the Gospel to the heart of the child."


September 17 | Evening of Prayer and Praise

Join us for an evening of prayer and praise in the sanctuary led by Jason Harris. This evening event will not only enable us to pray for our church and our mission to the city, but also provide us with an opportunity to connect with one another across our corporate worship services and Community Groups. Children are welcome to participate!


September 24 | "Christian Reflections on the Declaration of Independence (Part 1)" with Michael McConnell

Stanford Law professor Michael McConnell will help you learn how to navigate the complicated intersection between Christian liberty and national politics.

Michael W. McConnell is the Richard and Frances Mallery Professor and Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. From 2002 to 2009, he served as a Circuit Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican, and confirmed by a Democratic Senate by unanimous consent. McConnell has previously held chaired professorships at the University of Chicago and the University of Utah, and visiting professorships at Harvard and NYU (where he is teaching this fall). He teaches courses on constitutional law, constitutional history, First Amendment, and interpretive theory. His book, "The President Who Would Not Be King: Executive Power Under the Constitution," was published by Princeton University Press in 2020, based on the Tanner Lectures in Human Values, which he delivered at Princeton in 2019. His book, co-authored with Nathan Chapman, "Agreeing to Disagree: How the Establishment Protects Religious Diversity and Freedom of Conscience," was published by Oxford University Press in 2023. He has also co-written casebooks in Constitutional Law and Religion and the First Amendment. McConnell has argued sixteen cases in the United States Supreme Court, most recently Carney v. Adams (2020). defending a provision of the Delaware Constitution requiring political balance on that state's courts. He is currently representing the lead challengers to the legality of President Trump’s tariffs. He earned his B.A. from Michigan State University and his J.D. from University of Chicago, and has received honorary degrees from Notre Dame University and Michigan State. He served as law clerk to Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. and D.C. Circuit Chief Judge J. Skelly Wright. He has been Assistant General Counsel of the Office of Management & Budget, Assistant to the Solicitor General of the Department of Justice, and a member of the President's Intelligence Oversight Board. He is Senior of Counsel to the law firm Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati, and is co-chair of Meta’s Oversight Review Board.

November 19 | Thanksgiving Dinner for Community Groups

Community Group leaders and members — Join us for our annual Thanksgiving dinner for Community Groups. This is a great opportunity for Community Group members to meet others from different groups and fellowship together over a special meal. Central will provide the turkey and mashed potatoes. CG members are asked to bring another shareable dish or volunteer to help set up or clean up.
