Frequently Asked Questions

  • What can I expect on Sundays?

On a typical Sunday morning, you should expect to be enthusiastically greeted by a broad cross-section of New Yorkers who aim to live out the gospel which is heard, read and proclaimed in a variety of ways. The chief task at Central is worship, which is seeing the worth of God and giving God what he is worth. The shape of the worship here at Central is as follows:

Adoration: Call to worship, hymns, and songs of praise

    Confession: Confession of sin

    Assurance: Declaration of forgiveness

    Intercession: Prayers of the people

    Thanksgiving: Offering and doxology

Instruction: Scripture reading, sermon, confession of faith

Communion: Invitation to the table, words of institution, and personal receiving of communion

    Benediction: Blessing and charge

  • What is the preaching style?

Our pastors, Jason Harris and Chris Hildebrand, are committed to communicating the truths of the historic Christian faith in a way that is gripping, relevant, and applicable to the lives of New Yorkers, while addressing common questions and objections. The preaching may be spiritually challenging, but it always centers on a message of grace, which finds its fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus. If you’re looking to grow in your understanding of the meaning and significance of Christianity for your life today, then this may be the church for you.

  • What is the worship style?

Our beautiful and expressive worship experience is an artful and unassuming blend of an eclectic mix of musical genres and styles aimed at leading the whole people of God into Spirit-filled worship and a life-transforming encounter with the risen Jesus. Through our worship, we seek to sing of the same gospel of grace that we find written in the Scriptures and proclaimed through the preaching.

  • What do I wear?

Feel free to dress in whatever way makes you most comfortable. Some people come in jeans while others prefer to sport a tie or wear a dress. If it comes down to a decision between skipping worship or arriving in your cycling gear, we would prefer that you come as you are. We would like nothing more than for you to join us.

  • How do I get there?

Central Church is located in the Upper East Side at Park Avenue and 64th Street. If you’re coming from uptown or downtown, you can take the N, W, R, 4, 5, or 6 trains to Lexington Avenue and 59th Street and walk north or the 6 train to the 68th Street-Hunter College station and exit south. You can also take the Q and F trains and exit at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street.

  • Do you offer parking?

We do not have church-sponsored parking, but there are various parking options near the church. The closest garage can be found on 65th Street between Park and Lexington Avenue.

  • Do children attend a separate service?

At Central, we believe that children should be both seen and heard! We encourage the children to worship alongside the adults during the first part of the service. Following the “Prayer with Children,” the children are welcome to stay in the sanctuary throughout the service or they may attend Children’s Worship on the seventh floor. The children will be escorted by their teachers to the seventh floor where you can pick them up immediately following the service. We also offer Youth Group meetings on Sundays. Middle school aged kids meet from 1-2pm and high school students meet from 2:30-3:30pm.

Central is a very welcoming community! We are bound together by a commitment to the gospel of grace, so on a typical Sunday morning you should expect to be enthusiastically greeted by a broad cross-section of New Yorkers from all walks of life who are struggling together to understand and live out the story of Christianity. Many people have been committed Christians for several years while others may have recently begun exploring the Christian faith, which means that Central is a great place for committed Christians and interested inquirers alike.

Feel free to dress in whatever way makes you most comfortable. Some people come in jeans while others prefer to sport a tie or wear a dress. If it comes down to a decision between skipping worship or arriving in your cycling gear, we would prefer that you come as you are! We would like nothing more than for you to join us.

We at Central love children and believe that they should be both seen and heard! We encourage the children to worship alongside the adults during the first part of the service. Following the “Prayer with Children,” the children are welcome to stay in the sanctuary for the remainder of the service or they may attend Children’s Worship on the seventh floor.

NURSERY

For parents of children ages 6 months through 2 years old, Central’s nursery is located on the seventh floor and is available from 9:30am to 1pm on Sundays. Please let the caregiver know of your child’s special needs. We strive to provide a safe, warm, and healthy nursery in order to love and provide for your children.

NURSING MOTHER'S ROOM

The nursing mother’s room is located downstairs on the mezzanine level outside the women’s restroom. We hope this will be a comfortable place for mothers to care for their infants while also being able to hear what is being sung and said in the sanctuary.
